Roleplay Introduction and Basics

motivator-roleplaying
roleplaying-2

Roleplaying (RPing), in the online video game context, means playing a character (aka a “toon”) beyond how much damage they do or how many hitpoints they have, and playing them as a real person, with emotions, a history, interests and flaws, and so on. And then taking that character into whatever scenarios with other Roleplayers (RPers) and seeing what plays out. It is, in many ways, similar to acting. Your character can be an expression of yourself, or be someone completely different from you. RPing can get very wild.

I like to think of online Roleplaying as a book written on the fly by multiple authors. Roleplaying is a way to enhance and explore the imagination like nothing else. It can become very immersive and intense, and be a lot of fun. Interactions between characters can be of any kind, from making friends, to dealing with various issues, to verbal or even physical conflicts, and of course erotic interactions can happen as well. Erotic Roleplay (ERP) is no replacement for reality, but sure it is a lot of fun.

While you are RPing it is required that you make it clear when you are talking “In Character” (IC) or “Out of Character” (OOC). When I’m IC, I like to use dialogue quotes for character voices and normal typing for body language/descriptions. When I’m OOC, I like to use brackets [] around my text. Imagine the following two posts for clear examples:

She turns her head toward the rude man and flatly says, “Yeah, whatever. Piss off.”

[Yeah, whatever. Piss off.]

The first post is done IC, it’s one character saying piss off to another. While the second post is done OOC, and it’s one player saying piss off to another. Players can have their characters engage in disagreements and conflicts, and still be great friends. Different RPers will use different signs to differentiate between IC and OOC. As long as it’s clear and consistent when the post is IC or OOC, there are no hard rules.

It is a vital element of Roleplaying to remember there are players and than there are characters, and they are not always the same! I’m a very respectful and understanding person in real life (RL), but that doesn’t mean some asshole villain I’m RPing as has to be the same as me.

scared

The tense in which RPing is done can be past, present, and even future where the word: “would” is used way too much. Since I write in present tense as a novelist I RP in present tense too. Past tense is fine as well. And while people have the freedom to use future tense, I personally do not enjoy it. It reeks of weakness and lack of confidence. Ether your character is freaking doing it or not. Would implies asking for permission on every little action, and thereby you as the player lack the confidence, knowledge, and understanding to know you are doing the right thing. Compare and contrast the following two posts:

He shifts her red hair out of the way to caress her neck with sweet kisses. His teasing fingertips fall along the center of her sensitive bared back, down and down until he stops just above her curvacious ass.

He would shift her red hair out of the way to caress her neck with sweet kisses. His teasing fingertips would fall along the center of her sensitive bared back, down and down until he would stop just above her curvacious ass.

So I’m supposed to give an okay on every single action and word a player wants his character to do/speak? Long as you’re not god-modeing (trying to completely control everything), just freaking do it and see what happens!

RPing requires imagination, typing skills, and good grammar. If you don’t have those 3 qualities, or at least the desire to improve those 3 qualities, RPing probably isn’t for you. Becoming a better writer will make you a better RPer. And yes, vise-versa as well.

This isn’t the place to dive into the 10 hour lecture on the subject, but the world needs to keep the imagination alive for it is slowly dying. This is one of the many reasons I love and promote Roleplaying. Roleplaying requires your imagination and participation, unlike so many other forms of entertainment. Everything we experience in our lives was once just an idea in the human imagination. It all started in the mind. And if a beautiful world is ever to come about in real life, it will have started in the mind. This is a Law of Nature, not some idea.

The way someone writes speaks volumes about the way they are on the inside. The way you RP says a lot about your character. What does who-gives-a-shit spelling, make-up-your-own-rules grammar, and chalk-board scraping prose, have to say about someone’s mind? I’m not a grammar or spelling nazi, but sticking to clear and universally established grammar, spelling, and definitions are vital for healthy communication.

There are countless RP communities on the web and across different online games. Champions Online (CO) has become my home, due to the superhero universe and the freedom to create my own customized characters. If you’re interested in RP, and/or ERP, send me an e-mail within CO at my in-game e-mail: “@fyremelons1618” and voice you’re interest! I’m looking for mature minds to invite into my RP community, people who are respectful, imaginative, and fun, even if they have zero experience with RP. I am willing to teach—Hence, this webpage!

Roleplay Tips and Tricks

1: Use proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

spelling

Put capitals at the start and periods (or question marks/exclamation marks/eclipses) at the end of your sentences, even if your post is only one sentence. if you don’t your posts look stupid they can also become awkward and clunky to read see what I mean If you’re gonna use markers for emotes, make them clear and consistent. Spelling errors happen, I do it all the time, but make an effort to correct them. The more fluently you think and speak, the more fluently you will write and Roleplay.

2: Distinguish OOC chat from IC chat in a clear and consistent way.

Whatever you use for OOC/IC be consistent and clear about it. There are no rules on exactly what you must use, but there is a rule to keep it clear and consistent.

3: Establish clear markers for post continuations and end of posts.

If you know your post will continue into another, mark it. I like to simply put an arrow “>” at the end of a continued post. I put ether a period or eclipse to mark the end. The eclipse says “Your turn…”

4: Do a quick proof-read of your posts before sending.

Posts can not get very long, and often times one quick read through is enough to catch your mistakes. Try to get in the habit of doing one quick read through before posting, so you can correct mistakes before you post them. (I myself should do this one more often!)

5: Check what chat channel you’re on before sending that ERP post!

Always have a “core” chat channel that you switch back to after making a post in another channel. When you post in another channel, get in the habit of immediately switching back to your core channel.

6: Set up Roleplay times and plan ahead.

Setting times and dates for RP is generally a good idea, although at the same time the spontaneous nature of RP is something to never forget.

7: Focus on one thing at a time to immerse yourself in that one Roleplay experience.

Dancing-Trees_art

I am sometimes guilty of doing “other things” during RP, but I usually like to immersive myself in that one RP experience to make it memorable and enjoyable. If you’re not into the RP, no worries! Move on and find something that captures your attention.

8: Feed your fellow Roleplayer’s imagination and “dance” with them.

There is a kind of magic that happens during good RP, where things just flow back and forth. Don’t seek to completely dominate the RP, but at the same time don’t be so quiet you basically say/do nothing. Have a strong voice that leaves room for other strong voices, and give everyone involved their due time and attention.

9: Find a balance between lengthy details and keeping your posts short.

Depending on the RP situation details can be wonderful, or be in the way.  Sometimes that quick and simple post is best to keep things going, and sometimes going into detail is best to keep things going. Generally speaking, you wanna give teasers and questions at first, and then the good stuff with details later on. We as humans are problem solving beings, we love to find answers to questions, we love to uncover mysteries. It’s in our true nature. So keep the questions going!

10: Use a combination of body language, dialogue, environment, thoughts, emotions,
actions, obvious stuff, subtle details, and whatever else to construct the scene.

Use every tool you can to construct and progress the scene. From the obvious to the subtle. Bodily gestures can say volumes about someone, especially in a universe of such varied powers. As an example, Fyrona has large elven ears that are so extremely sensitive they are actually sex organs for her. So when she shifts some red hair behind an elven ear, she’s actually “touching herself.”

11: Above all, make it fun!

Remember why we are playing in the first place. To explore and enhance the imagination, make some online friends, and above all: Have Fun! Gaming and Roleplaying shouldn’t be stressful or worrisome, they should be de-stressing and liberating. If you are no longer having fun, than it’s time to take a break and remember other things about life.

12: Learning how to be a better writer will make you be a better Roleplayer.

If you want to be a better RPer become a better Writer. There are countless books and websites to find advice on writing, so look around! The next section will sum up my own key points of advice on the art of writing. It is by no means a complete list.

Better Writing is Better Roleplaying

1: Nuts and Bolts

nut_and_bolt_chess_set_by_graphicpoetry-d3j6elq

I’m piling all the basic obvious stuff here. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, the nuts and bolts of writing. This is by no means a complete course, just a basic rundown. Periods and commas are your main weapons. Use them often. While Exclamation Marks, Question Marks, and Eclipses are your special weapons. Use them only when the situation arises.

Periods are pretty obvious, it’s just a matter of actually using them for some people. Mark when one sentence ends, and another begins.

If you, don’t know, the proper use of, commas, you need to learn. Commas can be easily overused, as I am guilty of sometimes, so see what a sentence looks like without the comma before you decide on using it. Commas are fine for stuttering or fumbling characters, just don’t overdo it.

Exclamation marks are great, but easily overused. Use them for extra cheery sentences, surprises, and rarely as possible. Make them stand out when you do use them.

Question Marks are a great tool. Put them in the middle of dialogue to imply the character is asking a question with a word. Use them instead of putting “he asks”. Use them to change the voice of a sentence, such as: “I would like to think so?”

Eclipses are those 3 dots “…” that I see used way too often with some people. If… you are gonna… use those 3 dots… don’t overdo it because it looks… like you don’t know what to write in their place, and it’s annoying if overdone. Just get to the freaking point already! Use Eclipses to mark dramatic pauses, and at the end to imply there is more. I also sometimes use Eclipses at the end of my RP posts to say: “Your turn, you continue it…”

Capitals belong at the start of sentences, names, places, and to replace someones name with a title. For instance: “Hey Mom, can we go?” Is correct. While: Jane’s mom said they couldn’t go yet. Is also correct. Because it’s Jane’s mom, and not just Mom. Also: The moms of the world cheered. Is also correct, because “moms” in that context is a general noun.

I don’t mind RPers who don’t use dialogue quotes, as long it’s clear when the character is speaking. But in general writing, dialogue quotes are a must. If speech continues into another paragraph, you don’t put a dialogue quote at the end of the paragraph and you do put a dialogue quote at the start of the new paragraph. Dialogue is considered its own sentence, so you generally capitalize the start of the dialogue.

Within RP different “unofficial” punctuation marks are used, for emotes and more. Such as: *breaks into dance* instead of: She breaks into dance. This is fine, as long as the emote is kept clearly separate from dialogue and descriptions. I sometimes use the emote star signs ** to put added emphasis on a sound or movement. Also, another unofficial punctuation mark I use is: *T* at the start of a sentence to imply it’s being telepathically communicated.

Whatever writing you use, just make sure it’s clear and gets the message across. Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation are not there to be annoying or cumbersome, they are they to ensure our language stays clear, universal, and as concise as possible without sacrificing complexity. Healthy communication requires healthy channels of communication. So use them.

2:Show, Don’t Tell

show-dont-tell-nicolemichelleblog-com

Bob was really angry.

(Versus)

Bob shoved the driver’s side door out of his way and got out, stormed back to the trunk, and slammed the damn thing down, rocking the entire car.

Could you tell Bob was angry in the second sentence? You generally don’t want to describe someone’s emotions directly, you want to describe what they do because of those emotions. Telling is faster and simpler than showing, and sometimes that is what you want. But generally speaking you want drama and tension, and showing is the way to go for that.

Telling is very “Panoramic,” which means you quickly cover lots of time and events with your words, to give background and setting. While Showing is very “Dramatic,” which means you spend a lot of words to cover little time but with big events, to give emotional scenes and intense moments. Use both Panoramic and Dramatic to the fullest. Usually you want lots of Dramatic with just enough Panoramic to give the proper set and setting. Hence: Show, don’t Tell. For the most part.

3:Give Each Word its Space

normal_fire_cake_003

Some words are the major ingredients of delicious sentences, the cake if you will, and must be used often. Common words such as: the, and, are, some, as, he, she, they, them, and so on. While other words are situation-specific, they are the super high calorie but freaking delicious icing on the cake, such as: delicious, unbreakable, hard, soft, round, long, succulent, slippery, buxom, or voluptuous, among countless more. (Doctor Freud take a memo at the “random” words that came to my mind!) The common words can be used with abandon, don’t worry about them. But the situation-specific words need their “space” on the page, or post. For example:

The delicious cake was loved by everyone. It was so delicious there wasn’t any leftovers. Everybody requested that delicious cake again. They even wanted the delicious cake for their own parties.

We get it. The cake was “delicious.” But what else was it? The second use of “delicious” was were it should have ended. Let’s read that again but change only two words:

The delicious cake was loved by everyone. It was so delicious there wasn’t any leftovers. Everybody requested that irresistible cake again. They even wanted Nortra’s cake for their own parties.

Now we know the cake was irresistible, and who made it. There is much more story around the cake now, much more to think about. The sentence also flows better, and doesn’t sound repetitive. Give each non-common word it’s space, and seek to use multiple words to describe the same or similar things. A Thesaurus is one of your best friends!

4: Have Trust in Your Words

You don’t need to write 10,000 words to describe what kind of shoe is being worn. And just the word “sexy” doesn’t do the timelessly beautiful female body justice. Have faith that your words will get the point across, but at the same time use a healthy variety of words. Have trust in your reader’s imagination and their power to “fill in the blanks.” Saying it’s a grocery store already conjures up images of check-out lines, shelves full of stuff, and shiny floors. You don’t HAVE to describe all that. But maybe it’s a shitty grocery store, and the floor is dirty, and nobody is in there but bums and robbers. Now that needs describing.

5: Start Strong, End Strong

the-passage-of-time-jason-ticehurst

Sentences should start strong with a catchy hook, give some info along the way to maintain interest, and end on a high note with a tasty “treat.” This goes for paragraphs, chapters, and entire stories. You don’t wanna bore your audience right off the bat, and you don’t wanna end with a fizzle. Put the complex, in-depth, time-consuming information somewhere in the middle. Order does make a difference, a big difference. Let’s look at a 3 different sentences to showcase this idea:

The bus full of kids was falling off the bridge, but thanks to the efforts of our newest hero, none of them were harmed.

Thanks to the efforts of our newest hero, the bus full of kids that nearly fell of the bridge didn’t, and none of them were harmed.

No kids were harmed in the bus that nearly fell over the bridge, thanks to the efforts of our newest hero.

Can you honestly say the second or third sentence is stronger than the first? The first sentence tells a story “in order.” There is a timeline that makes sense within the sentence. First, the bus had to be nearly falling off. Then the hero had to save the day. And finally the kids weren’t harmed. That’s how it happened in reality, and so that’s how it should be described in words. Keep your writing ordered in a way that makes sense to the human mind. It will be stronger because of it.

6: Sentences Speak Too

The way your sentences are structured will say volumes beyond what words are used. If you want to go with quick, logical, or emotionless, using lots of short sentences can help. If you want to go with elaborate, confusing, or emotional, going with long sentences can help. The sentence’s structure and flow give a feeling, which can vastly help with creating the scene. Let’s explore this with an example:

I sat down. I opened the TV dinner. I ate. The same as the night before. The same as the year before.

What a depressing story, but also a depressing way of writing it. The words telling the story match the way the sentences flow. Let’s see what happens if we write it differently:

I sad down and opened my TV dinner. I ate the same as I have for over a year now.

tumblr_n3ptftSNdz1r238sko1_400

With just a few new words and linking up the sentences, the feeling has changed. The story has changed. Can you see, can you feel what happened? A different story is being told all of sudden! Sure, the content of the story is the same (TV dinners for over a year), but the context has changed (the way it is written).

Here’s some more examples, that I’ll let you think about. One is not necessarily right over the other. Just pay attention to the feeling the writing structure arouses in relation to the story being told:

There was noise. There were cars. There was hustling and bustling all around. There was too much information for my brain. Too much all at once. I already hated this place called a “city.”

There was noise, there were cars, there was hustling and bustling all around, there was too much information for my brain, too much all at once. I already hated this place called a “city.”

She turns toward him. She says, “I love you.” But her words are just means of social acceptance. She has no more experience of true love than he does.

She turns toward him and says, “I love you,” but her words are just means of social acceptance, she has no more experience of true love than he does.

7: Abverbs Not Sexily Used

Adverbs generally suck, but they’re awesome when used properly. You want to use adverbs to change the meaning of a word, not enhance it. As a simple example:

She sadly smiled.

She happily smiled.

Smiling is generally a happy thing, hence why “happily” is a wasted word. But sadly smiled speaks volumes about someone’s emotional state. You want adverbs to actually enhance your writing by bringing more information to it, rather than trying to “prop up” what words you are already using. Have faith in your words, and trust they won’t need adverbs to stand on their own. Use adverbs as little as possible, so they will have more impact when they are used. It’s the sexy thing to do.

And please don’t ever use the adverb “sexily” unless you’re making fun of it as I did above. It’s the worst word ever.

8: Of Poetry and Logic

f1d01db49e448b16c79589c7d7974de8

Writing can be very abstract, out there, not specific. And Poetic. Or, writing can be very defined, accurate, not decorated. And Logical. Words can become colorful strokes of an artist’s, to create beauty out of mere black and white. Words can also become means of complex and accurate communication. Dance back and forth between the poetic and the logical, between art and language, between personal interpretation and detailed descriptions, between the yin and the yang. You can’t write in abstract ways all the time, and nor can you write like a boring scientist all the time. Flow between the two.

This can also be thought of as “climbing the latter of abstraction.” As you climb the latter, things become more abstract and artistic. As you descend the latter, things become more defined and logical. Don’t get stuck.

9: Raise Questions without Answers

It is the question that drives us. Create characters with a rich backstory, that isn’t revealed too quickly. Create worlds the same. Tease the audience into the question, and then lead them along with the answer on a stick.

We are problem-solving, story-loving, answer-seeking beings. Argue against that all you’d like, it’s the truth. One of the universal elements of good story telling is raising questions and not immediately giving answers. If you tell a story up to a tense moment, but than suddenly stop on a cliffhanger, people will actually pay more attention to whatever you say afterward, in the unconscious hope they will figure out the rest of the story.

animasf

This is why TV shows almost always end with a cliffhanger, to get you to keep watching the show. They often end with a cliffhanger before commercial breaks as well, so you’ll watch those very-well-paid-for-commercials selling you shit you don’t need. Ever wonder why the TV and commercial industries are structured as they are? Well it’s no mystery. Stay “tuned.” Huh, yeah. Tuned to what exactly? But I digress…

10: A Million Words Till Style

It has been said that a million words of crap must be written before a writer will get anywhere near good. I can attest to that. I’ve written a lot of crap! No writer started as amazing, and then never improved. Writing is both a developed skill and a natural gift.

If you “suck” that’s okay. Keep writing, keep learning, keep expanding your mind and imagination, and especially your heart, and don’t give up. No matter how much time passes or how many people try to put you down. Think about anyone that has become extremely good at something. Bruce Lee trained for hours a day for years and always sought to improve himself. Arnold Schwarzenegger was once arrested for breaking into a gym when they were closed, just to workout more. You think those crazy jugglers at the circus learned those moves overnight? There are certainly natural gifts, things we are called to in life, but if we don’t strive, train, and seek with everything we’ve got to develop and express those natural gifts, they end up not being gifts.

11: Work From the Lump

6935673826_68cc94d960_b

Let’s compare the art of writing with the art of wood carving. In writing, you start with a blank page. You don’t yet have anything to work with. In wood craving, you start with a lump of wood. You have a core piece to start working with, to start chipping away what isn’t needed toward the final product.

Writing is best done (for me at least) by creating that “lump” and then chipping away what isn’t needed toward the final product. Just crank out that first draft and use the horrible adverbs, write that not-so-hot idea in, add too many details, and just let yourself go wild. Create your lump. And then start to chip away what doesn’t work, what doesn’t flow, again and again, until you create the final product. Great stories aren’t written, they are re-written.

And this metaphor of wood carving can be applied to other forms of art and creative efforts. Just do it, and don’t care about perfection or the final product. You don’t have to run the marathon the first time you go running. You don’t have to make the perfect costume in Champions Online on your first try. You don’t have to be world’s greatest painter on your first panting. If the first song you make totally sucks, that’s okay.

We all have to start somewhere.

The Erotic Roleplay Guide

Corseted Tits_6

Erotic Roleplay. Some love it, some hate it, some pass final judgment on others based solely on it. I hope that everyone agrees we all have a right to enjoy ourselves however we wish, so long as we do no harm. That is what freedom is about (at least in part), is it not?

Sex and Life are directly linked. They are interwoven deep within our unconscious minds. One cannot exist without the other. To suppress one is to suppress the other. To embrace one is to embrace the other. I am not suggesting everyone should become a wild promiscuous porn star or something, but I am suggesting that everyone should have their healthy avenues to explore, enjoy, and express their sexuality. So long as no harm is done, truly no harm, than people have a right to their sexuality.

Sex isn’t a bad thing. “Nontraditional” sex isn’t a bad thing ether. Being a sexual explorer, being a person who wishes to experience different pleasures in reality and/or fantasy, being a mind not bound by accepted social chains, isn’t a bad thing as well. Believe it or not, morality and sexuality are not married. Sexuality doesn’t determine morality, and morality doesn’t determine sexuality. I don’t care how you get your sexual kicks: morality is morality and immorality is immorality. If you’re a good person, you’re a good person, regardless of what you’re into sexually, no matter what it is (as long as it respects Free Will and innocence of course).

Respect for Free Will, and understanding of objective right and wrong determines morality. Not if someone enjoys wild fantasies involving impossible things, like giant dicks, superhuman tits, futas, furrys, tentacles, or whatever else. Sexual doesn’t automatically mean shallow, and erotic doesn’t automatically mean immoral. So to all those ERP haters… what exactly do you have a problem with?

But enough about defending ERP, let’s talk about it directly. I like to think of ERP as a porno I get to partly direct. I don’t necessarily imagine myself as the toon I’m RPing, I imagine my toon as my toon, and I’m just enjoying the show. But everyone has their own approach to RPing, and that’s fine.

Sexual pleasure naturally creates bonding, and desires to maintain connections to that sexual pleasure. We are wired that way. And while yes that wiring can be overwritten to a large degree, it is never fully removed. (This paragraph goes for any sort of sexual interactions by the way.) It is vital that you don’t become “attached,” but rather become “connected.” Bonding doesn’t mean putting another in emotional bondage. Love doesn’t mean smothering, it means breathing free. If the sexual pleasure is associated with something negative, you need to reconsider how you get your sexual pleasures. Pleasure without problems. That’s the main motto of Goddess Fyre.

Here’s some advice and rules about ERPing:

o-BITING-LIP

-Keep in mind some people do not enjoy ERP, and might even be turned off by it. Respect their interests and keep the ERP in the proper set and setting.

-Champions Online is a Teen rated game, and that must be respected. Keep the ERP private. Don’t even mention anything about porn or XXX rated material in public chat channels. Keep your ERP posts private. Keep any costumes implying nudity private. I’ll mention in public that Fyre is a “model and more” and a “teacher” but that’s it.

-Erotic Roleplay is a lot of fun. But as with anything, you can burn out on it. Enjoy it, but enjoy other things too. Life is all about balance, no matter what we might be talking about.

-It’s important to keep the ERP going with emotional value, with a healthy relationship of some flavor between the characters. Keep the ERP in context with the characters, and give those characters more than one dimension.

-Mix normal RP in with ERP. Wind your way into the ERP through normal RP. This is great for foreplay, and teasing will make the pleasing all the better. It’s fine to jump right into the ERP sometimes, just don’t overdo it.

-Do not forget that the player and the character are not the same, they might be quite different in important ways. Having characters date, fuck, and connect is wonderful. But that doesn’t mean the players are going to do the same.

-Remember what your character is wearing will speak volumes about what they are interested in, which of course can vary. Use different costumes to broadcast different states of mind. If Goddess Fyre walks into a club half naked with her superhuman tits popping out, she’s obviously looking for attention and a good time. But if she walks into a club dressed in her normal clothes that cover her up, she’s probably just looking for a drink and some chit-chat.

-And above all, remember to have fun with ERP and don’t stress out about it. We are here online to expand and explore and express the imagination. Are we not?
